Home-grown fruit and vegetables are having something of a renaissance at the moment. It’s a wonderful time for fruit and vegetables. Everyone seems to be on board with the idea of organic, natural and home grown produce. This is great news for those who have long been attesting to the virtues of veggie plots in their gardens. It’s a great way to save money. More importantly you can truly be sure that you are in receipt of good, honest food that hasn’t been sprayed with chemicals.

For many people, the choice to opt for home-grown produce is obvious: it tastes better. It’s not a matter of snobbery; it’s a scientific fact that home-grown fruit and vegetables taste amazing.

Let’s take a look at some fantastic reasons why this is the case.

  1.    More Choice of How You Grow Your Own

As any gardener will attest, growing your own comes with greater choice. As you are not mass producing vegetable cultivation in your back garden, you have more choice, time and care to apply to your crop. As such, this time and attention is reflected in the overall quality of the harvest. This ensures that the produce is tasty.

  1.    Home-Grown: The Healthier Option

Home-grown produce is by far the healthiest option on the market. As many gardeners will only use compost, peat and fertiliser on their harvest, they are omitting harsh chemicals. All of the produce that is grown within a backyard or garden has not been sprayed with harsh substances. These substances can have health fans in a panic. After all, we are not sure what is in these chemicals and whether they are truly safe for consumption.

  1.    No Chemicals Were Used in the Growing of This Fruit and Vegetables

Talking of chemicals, the complex nature of chemicals for use in food production can have a severe impact on the way in which our produce tastes. Fruit and vegetables that are home-grown have higher levels of antioxidants within them. This is because chemicals are not used in the cultivation of home-grown crops.

  1.    Fresh, Exciting

Let’s face it, supermarket fruits and vegetables are not as fresh as they should be. Think about the sheer amount of air miles that humble asparagus crowns and tantalising strawberries have to cover, just to get to the store. Supermarket fruit and vegetables are never produced in season. They are flown in from all over the world. As such, this impairs the taste as they are not entirely mature.

  1.    Grown to Your Tastes – Ignoring the Supermarket Ideals

Supermarkets grow fruit and vegetables to suit an aesthetic ideal. During the harvest, the crops are manipulated to look a certain way. It goes without saying that the flavour of the fruit and vegetables is decreased during this process. This is not the case with home-grown produce. The fruit and veggies are grown for nutritional value and as such retain their awesome flavours.

Growing your own is not just a savvy way to save money. For the ardent foodies, it’s a superb way to ensure that you are eating the finest, juiciest, ripest fruits and vegetables.
